Understanding Heart Rate Variability (HRV): Your Body's Stress Response Indicator
What is Heart Rate Variability (HRV)?
Heart Rate Variability (HRV) measures the subtle variations in time intervals between consecutive heartbeats, typically recorded in milliseconds. Despite its name, a "variable" heart rate is actually a sign of good health and fitness.
Unlike your resting heart rate, which measures beats per minute, HRV reflects the intricate dance between your sympathetic nervous system (fight-or-flight) and parasympathetic nervous system (rest-and-digest). This autonomic nervous system controls essential functions like breathing, digestion, and heart rate regulation without conscious effort.
A higher HRV (typically 20-70ms for healthy adults) indicates better cardiovascular fitness, stress resilience, and recovery capacity. Conversely, consistently low HRV may signal chronic stress, overtraining, illness, or poor cardiovascular health.
